Florida Fruitful for Fogleman

Series Veteran Gets Fifth Career Win in Hooters ProCup Series

St. Augustine, FL – What a finish! That could best describe the final two laps as Jay Fogleman and his Cooper Family Ford held off a hard-charging Bobby Gill to win the Jackaroo Sauces 250 Saturday night at St. Augustine Speedway. It was the fifth win in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series for Fogleman and his first since 1999 on a damp night in Florida.

Jay Fogleman
Fogleman was able to withstand a one-hour rain delay and keep a lead pack of five cars behind him for the final 95 laps after the brief shower.

Fogleman, from Durham, North Carolina, took the lead on lap 109 when he passed Mike Laughlin, Jr. to lead a race for the first time this season in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series. Gill took the lead from Fogleman just one time to lead lap 232 while the duo battled for the lead side-by-side. Fogleman passed Gill in turn three of that lap and remained out front for the remainder of the night.

“We had a really good car tonight,” said Fogleman. “This entire team worked hard to get us here and in a position to win. Thankfully I was able to hold off Bobby (Gill) on that last restart and I am sure it was exciting for everyone to watch but I was working as hard a I could to hold on to the lead.”

While the rain delay seemed to make a difference to several drivers, Fogleman felt the delay helped him.

“The delay helped us a little because we were able to cool our tires down and I think that helped,” added Fogleman. “I knew Bobby would be there at the end but we have raced against one another a lot the past two years and he raced me hard and I knew he would be there at the end.”

Steve Christian
Lance Snacks Pole Award winner Steve Christian followed in third with Mario Gosselin and Hal Goodson completed the top five.

Christian took the lead at the start of the race and led the way for the first 95 circuits around the challenging one-half mile oval. Daniel Johnson passed Christian for the lead on lap 96 to lead a Hooters ProCup Series race for the first time this season. Laughlin, Jr. took the lead and remained in front until Fogleman assumed the top spot that eventually led to the win.

The race was slowed 11 times by caution with Bill Plemons, Jr. and Neil Browder got together in turn one and collected Jabe Jones on lap 29. Jones was able to continue, however, Plemons and Browder both were unable to return to the track.

Jason Sarvis finished sixth to win the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award and Laughlin followed in seventh. Lee Tissot finished eighth with Shane Huffman collecting his second consecutive top-10 finish with Stacy Puryear completing the top ten finshers.

Derrick Kelley and Tom Pistone were the final two cars on the lead lap and finished 11 and 12 respectively.

Sarvis and Huffman both advanced 24 positions from their starting positions to share the W.J. Plemons Investments Hard Charger Award. Fogleman led at lap 125 to collect the Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader Award.

Thanks to his win at USA International Speedway in February and his runner-up finish at St. Augustine, Gill holds on to the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Southern Division points lead by 25 points over Christian (310-285). Fogleman moved into third place with Huffman and Sarvis competing the top five positions in the standings.

The USAR Hooters ProCup Series will once again visit the Sunshine State when the Southern Division schedule moves next to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. The Lucas Oil 250 presented by Food World will be the first-ever visit by the ProCup cars.
