YARD SALES, LATE MODELS, GO-KARTS AND MORE AT SOUTH BOSTON

South Boston, VA……..”America’s Hometown Track” welcomed clear skies and warm weather for its Halifax County Yard Sale 250 on Saturday night. Local “commodities brokers” took full advantage of the perfect conditions to buy, sell, and barter on the grounds of South Boston Speedway. Danville Community College and HomeMax fielded their finale for the “Student Challenge” in GO-Karts, with Chatham High School’s Adam Dunenvant claiming victory, as the region’s best Late Model drivers visited the fabled, asphalt bullring for some door-to-door racing excitement.

Phil Warren, “Rapid” Ray Young, and Dean Ward brought their visiting machines to battle weekly regulars Brandon Butler, Timothy Peters, and Eddie Johnson.

“We left a lot on the table in qualifying”, said Dean Ward (Winston-Salem, NC), “but we plan to get it all back in the race.”

“We’re happy to be back at South Boston”, exclaimed Ray Young, “We’ll see if we can get out in front of Brandon (Butler) and pull away from the field. It’s tough here, but we’re ready for it.”

Most noticeably absent was Rodney Sawyers, who was delayed by rain in Dover, DE for his effort in the Craftsman Truck Series event. South Boston salutes Rodney for his 20th place finish in only his second series start.

Timothy Peters
Timothy Peters (#2 Providence, NC) inherited his top starting spot from RACERAP.com pole award winner Brandon Butler (#29 Chester, VA), as the competition package put the two race winner back to a sixth place starting position. The Halifax 100 for the Textilease Late Model Division saw 21 fired-up machines light up the night with side-by-side racing from the front back to tenth. Butler charged to second in only five laps, but the five-way race for fifth between Warren (#16 Norfolk, VA), Owen Miller (#82 Emporia, VA), Scott Worley (#88 Long Island, VA), Dean Ward, and Eddie Johnson (#57 Ashland, VA) brought the crowd to their feet.

Sparks flew under Johnson’s Timberwolf Chevrolet, as he cut a tire and had to pit on lap 9. Warren fell victim to Miller and Worley, as Butler took the lead from Peters on lap 11.

Butler brushed the inside wall in turn four on lap 37 trying to get around lap traffic, but stayed in the gas and continued. Warren also cut a tire and relinquished a Top 10 position on lap 40. Ray Young slipped and slithered up under Peters for five laps before bumping into second. Dean Ward mixed it up with Worley and Jim Sink (#94 Chesterfiled, VA) for the fourth position for almost twelve laps before wrestling onto the leaderboard. Butler set sail for Victory Lane while Young, Peters, Ward, and Worley docked into the Top 5. Butler successfully completed a three-peat in the caution-free event.

“We’re tickled to death!” said an exuberant Butler, “We’re in this for the long haul, we weren’t sure about starting sixth, but it worked out for us tonight. We’ll come back and hopefully get a few more of these, get some more for the fans, and go for the champoionship!”

Pure Stock 4s pulled around the racing surface for 15 laps with Augie Saccoccio (#15 Durham, NC) leading the charge to victory lane. USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup regular, Jay Fogleman, made an appearance in the Southern Vintage Modified event, claiming the pole, and leading the entire way to the final lap. Lloyd Ashby made an impressive last effort charge, but Fogleman held the spot and pocketed the win. Pole sitter, Ryan Francisco (#81 Nathalie, VA) led from start to finish in the first of 40 lap twins for the American General Finance Limited Sportsman. Veteran Bill Moshenek (#27 Ringgold, VA) finished second with Chris Blalock (#2 Kenbridge, VA), Billy Myers (#05 Hurt, VA), and Richard Hylton (#31 Danville, VA) rounding out the Top 5. In the other 40 lap event, Bill Moshenek took the lead from the outside on lap 2, but Francisco pushed Moshenek into the backstretch wall on lap 11 dashing his hopes for a win into the concrete. Hard contact on lap 23 involving five cars brought out the red flag, before Francisco jumped to a good re-start enroute to another visit to Victory Lane.

NASCAR Rolling Thunder Modifieds rumbled to life with Allen Marshall (#17 Colonial Heights, VA) taking the re-drawn pole. Thomas Stinson (#4 Chesterfield, VA) found the lead with Chad Gordon (#03 Emporia, VA) running close behind. Stinson led the third, caution filtered restart on lap 42 and held off Gordon’s final charge for the win. Mark Slye (#57 Toano, VA) and Ronnie Davis (#14 Ashland, VA) were the closest possible competitors taking third and fourth, respectively.

“America’s Hometown Track” South Boston Speedway is back on June 16th for “The Virginia Lottery Night of Racing” with special guests Winston Cup driver, Hermie Sadler and WWF Superstar Hardcore Holly.
