HOMEMAX Student Challenges Set For South BostonSouth Boston, VA - High school students, representing six area high schools, will get a chance to round out their education by competing in South Boston's HOMEMAX Student Challenge, Saturday, April 21st and Saturday, June 2nd. Each of the six high schools will be trying for first place honors and a $1,000 cash donation, as well as bragging rights and the right to display the HOMEMAX Student Challenge trophy for a year. The two events are scheduled in conjunction with South Boston's NASCAR Weekly Racing Series events, featuring South Boston's legendary NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division, sponsored by Textilease. The HOMEMAX Student Challenge is a collaborative effort between HOMEMAX Home Centers, Danville Community College, Sir Richard's Batting Cage and Go Kart Center and South Boston Speedway. "Our association with motorsports and our co-sponsorship of H.C Sellers' South Boston Late Model race car has been an effective means to attract students to learn more about the educational and career opportunities at Danville Community College," commented DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey. "With the help of South Boston Speedway, HOMEMAX and Sir Richards, we will be transforming twelve students from spectators to racers at the race track. This is a rare opportunity for all six high schools to compete against each other. It is our hope that students and families come out in force and show their school spirit," Ramsey concluded. The student bodies of the six high schools are invited to come out and cheer on their race team. For the April 21st event, South Boston has cut the youth ticket price in half, charging only $2.50 per student. Participating high schools include Tunstall, Gretna, Halifax County, Dan River, George Washington and Chatham. . The first event, scheduled for April 21st will feature three separate races. The first race event will host Senator Charles Hawkins; DCC President Carlyle Ramsey; School Superintendents Andy Overstreet, Jerry Webb, and Dennis Witt; and WSET Co-anchor Brandon Pickett. The winner of this race will set the starting positions for the second race which will involve the high school principals/faculty (Matt Foutz, Chatham; Clarissa Knight, Dan River; Steve Stallings, George Washington; Steve Wall, Gretna; Albert Randolph, Halifax; and Jeff Early, Tunstall). Students will be cheering their principals/faculty on because how they finish will determine the starting order for the students themselves. The second event, scheduled for June 2nd, will feature only the students. Points will be awarded to each school's team for both events. The school with the most points will be declared the champion and receive the $1,000 First Place Award. In addition, Danville Community College Educational Foundation will present $500 to the second place school and $250 to the third place school. "HOMEMAX Home Centers is excited to be a part of a high-energy, go-cart racing event like this, that partners with DCC to provide our community with information on its innovative educational programs," commented Glenn Green. "To be successful in racing takes preparation, hard work and dedication, the same traits that young people need to succeed in their future careers. It's great that they can learn these traits and have some fun in the process," Glenn Green concluded.
