South Boston Getting Set for OpenerEvent Schedule BelowSouth Boston, VA……. It’s been four long months since race fans and competitors last converged on South Boston Speedway, the historic 4/10 mile Virginia bull ring. But this weekend Saturday, March 10th and Sunday, March 11th, will mark the end of cabin fever for South Boston race fans and competitors will come to an end this with the running of the NASCAR Featherlite Modified 200 and the Homemax 150 and the start of South Boston’s 44th season. While the Featherlite Modified Tour, NASCAR’s oldest division, is new to South Boston, Modified Stock Cars are not. During the early years of the Speedway, Modifieds were South Boston’s featured division, with Richmond’s legendary Ray Hendrick taking on all challengers. To celebrate this modified homecoming, special events have been scheduled on Saturday for Southern Vintage Modifieds and Rolling Thunder Modifieds. Saturday’s activities will also include racing action for South Boston’s Supers and Limited Sportsman divisions and it’s newest division, Pure Stock 4’s, as well as practice and time trials for the NASCAR Featherlite Modifieds and South Boston’s featured division, it’s Textilease sponsored NASCAR Late Model Stocks. On Sunday, the Textilease NASCAR Late Model Stocks will compete in the Homemax 150 at 2:00 pm, offering double points and $5,000 to win. The NASCAR Featherlite Modified 200 will get the green flag at 3:00 pm. South Boston has been hosting NASCAR events since 1960, but most Featherlite Modified Series drivers have never been on this storied 4/10 mile oval. Howell, N.J. driver, John Blewett III tested his Mastrobattisto Contractors Chevrolet during the off season commented, “it’s a beautiful facility. The turns are sweeping and it’s very fast. I think we will put on a great show for the fans”. Blewett scored two wins and a sixth place in 2000 series points, and is considered one of the hottest, series drivers, in this, only his third year. In addition to a full weekend of racing action, race fans will also be deciding which one of five South Boston Late Model stars will get to race in South Boston’s April 7th Textilease Medique 300, an ASA ACDelco Series event. The five eligible drivers include Nick Woodward, Rodney Sawyers, Brandon Butler, Gilbert King and Dean Ward. Fans can pick up their ballot in advance at participating Sheetz Convenience Stores, along with a coupon, good for $2 off the Gate Purchase of a General Admission Ticket for March 11th. Ballots will also be available at the track. Scott Worley, South Boston’s Late Model Rookie of the Year, can’t wait to get the season underway. “This year we’re coming hot out of the box. We have to be focused on running a good race and being there at the end”, Worley commented. “Double points sets the tone for the season and grabbing that cool five grand would be a sweet, Worley concluded.” On Saturday, March 10th, gates open at 7am, with racing beginning after Modified and Late Model time trials, at 2pm. On Sunday, gates open at 10am with a driver autograph session at 1pm, the HOMEMAX 150 at 2pm and the NASCAR Featherlite Modified 200 at 3pm race start.
