Brandon Butler Gets Win at SNSStory by Tom HamKENLY N.C. _ Aided by an adjustment after qualifying his Camaro on the outside pole, Pikeville’s Jon Howell cruised to the 25-lap Stock Look-Alike checkered flag in the Bailey’s 310 auto racing program at Southern National Speedway on Saturday night. Howell bolted into the lead at the drop of the green flag and maintained a working lead in registering his second conquest of the 2001 season. Howell said the adjustment consisted of loosening the car during the Pro Trucks 60-lapper that preceded the Stock Look-Alike feature. “The car was good,” Howell said. “We stayed consistent.” And as a result, the Camaro of points leader Jamie Mozingo stayed in the second place. “We ran pretty decent,” Mozingo said, “but the car was a little bit looser than we like it to be. It didn’t get any looser during the race and we were actually gaining a little. “But those guys (Howell’s team) needed a win. And they also put on new tires, while this is the seventh race on our tires.” Muriel Brock of Grantham, in a Camaro, continued his string of top-five runs by claiming the third spot. Completing the top five, respectively, were Junior Mewborn of LaGrange in a Monte Carlo and pole sitter Scott Davis of Goldsboro in a Camaro. Davis dropped well back into the 12-car field when he couldn’t find second gear on the start. Saturday night’s other victors were Roger Cates of Saratoga in Late Model Sportsman, Wayne Skinner of Wilson in Pro Trucks, Roy Creech of Clayton in Four-Cylinder Stock and Brandon Butler of Chester, Va., in Late Model Stock. Racing at the .4-mile asphalt SNS oval resumes next Saturday night with the Carquest 320 program. Features scheduled: 25 laps in Foss Auto Salvage Stock Look-Alike, Super Stock twins, 60 laps in Budweiser Pro Trucks and 200 laps in Late Model Stock.
