Better Engine Solutions & Technology Night presented by Pepsi

CAPRON, Va. (June 22) — Frank Deiny Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va., rolled to his second straight victory in the 100-lap RaceWorld.com Late Model Stock Car feature, part of Friday evening’s NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program, sponsored by Better Engine Solutions & Technology and Pepsi, at Southampton Motor Speedway.

Deiny started on the pole, at 96.006 mph, sharing the front row with Brandon Butler of Richmond, Va.

As the race got under way, the front row occupants dueled door-to-door with Deiny finally gaining the upper hand out of Turn 2 on lap 6. Within a handful of laps, Deiny had fashioned a two-car-length advantage over Butler.

Deiny’s lead remained stable until lap 34 when the leaders caught the tail of the field. Working expertly past the slower cars, Deiny was able to increase his margin to as much as half a straightaway.

The big lead vanished on lap 63, however, when the race’s first yellow flag waved. Other caution flags followed on laps 69 and 87. On each restart, Deiny was able to establish a comfortable edge over Butler, then, methodically, begin to pull away.

At the finish, Deiny was the winner by 1.196 seconds — about four car-lengths — over Butler. Mike Shearin of Emporia, Va., was third to the line, followed by Nick Woodward of High Point, N.C., and Chris Hopkins of Petersburg, Va.

In Victory Lane after the race, Deiny commented on his recent dominance: “Car’s been good all year and we’ve just been hitting it the last couple weeks. And tonight, I don’t know what we did, we really got it tonight and the good Lord was looking over us, so I’m just glad to be here.”

Runner-up Butler offered a salute to Deiny: “Yeah, I tell ya’, Frankie and those guys...hat’s off to ‘em. They had a great race car. We had a pretty good car. Just missed it a little bit. We’re gonna get back up there and win us one of these things.”

Third-place Shearin dedicated his first podium finish of the season to late Southampton County racing icon Speck Edwards and Dale Earnhardt.

Continuing, Shearin noted that a caution-free race would have suited him: “The car was getting better on long runs. Every time we’d have a caution, it would mess me up, but it was better on long runs. I think if we’d had a longer run, we’d have got up there with him (Butler), if we hadn’t got by him.”

Coming into the event, Jamey Caudill of Four Oaks, N.C., was the division points leader. Caudill, though, was absent, still trying to rebuild his car after a hard crash in the June 8 feature.

With Caudill sidelined, the points lead passed to Shearin. It is Shearin’s first appearance atop the standings at Capron since 1995 when he won the dirt Super Late Model championship. Butler, who began the season with two DNF’s, has rebounded and is second, only 20 points behind Shearin. Caudill, meanwhile, dropped to third, 28 points back.

In the evening’s other feature events:

• Bubba Hubbard of Richmond led from pole to checkers for his second win of the year in the 40-lap Sentry Food Mart Grand Stock race. He also gained sole possession of the division points lead. Chris Mueller of Chester, Va., held down the second spot throughout the event. On the final restart, at lap 37, he attached himself to Hubbard’s rear bumper in a bid for the win. On the last lap, though, Mueller bobbled in Turn 2, allowing Hubbard some breathing room. At the finish, Hubbard won by a little more than a car-length over Mueller. Irvin Stephens Jr. of Franklin, Va., was third to the line, followed by Brad Higginbotham of Chesapeake, Va., and Terri Williams of Capron. Heading into the race, John Eversole Jr. of Richmond shared the points lead with Hubbard and was ranked first in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Atlantic Seaboard Region ShorTrack Division standings. Eversole qualified third, but dropped to seventh on the restart following the first caution flag. He recovered and regained the third spot, but saw his night come to a premature end on lap 18 as he slowed to a halt in Turn 2 with mechanical problems. He was the first retiree from the event and was credited with 14th place.

• Robert Stell of Hobbsville, N.C., scored his first win of the year in the 25-lap Vic’s Auto Sales & Body Shop Pure Stock race. Points leader David Wheeler of Prince George, Va., was the fastest qualifier, but started sixth after a redraw. Steve Pittman of Ivor, Va., started on the pole with his dad, Tommy, alongside. After a couple false starts, Tommy Pittman grabbed the lead and proceeded to show the way for the first 19 circuits. Stell, meanwhile, started fourth, moved to third on lap 9 and took over the second spot on lap 15. When the race’s fourth caution flag flew on lap 18, he was in the process of taking the lead from Tommy Pittman, but saw the pass negated as scoring reverted to lap 17. Back under green, Stell tailed Pittman for two laps, then made the winning pass, diving under the leader at the start/finish line. After the fifth and final caution flag, at lap 22, Stell drove away from the pack and won by four car-lengths. Tommy Pittman was the runner-up, followed by Brian Smith of Portsmouth, Va., Wheeler and Ray Paul of Virginia Beach, Va.

• Brent Mann of Pendleton, N.C., was awarded his first SMS win in the 25-lap Mike Duman Auto Sales Mini Stock race after the apparent first- and second-place drivers were disqualified. Rick Freeman of Gloucester Point, Va., started the race from the pole and led all the way, finishing better than half a straightaway ahead of Troy Hutcheson of Virginia Beach. Mann was third to the stripe. During the post-race inspection, however, officials determined that both Freeman and Hutcheson had used a softening agent on their tires — a rules violation. They were DQ’d, elevating Mann to first place. Brian Bradley of Hopewell, Va., was second in the amended rundown, followed by Charlie Hubbard of Chesapeake, Wayne Bradley of Sutherland, Va., and Wayne Newton of Colonial Heights, Va.

• Craig Goess Jr. of Greenville, N.C., stayed unbeaten in a 25-lapper for the INEX Little Race Cars Legends, racking up his fifth win in five starts. Goess was the fastest qualifier, at 86.197 mph, and started third after a redraw. Kevin Yeatts of Powhatan, Va., started on the pole and led the opening lap. On the second circuit, Goess bypassed Yeatts on the backstretch, bringing Chesapeake’s Woody Howard, the track’s ‘99 Legends champ, along with him. Goess and Howard raced nose-to-tail until lap 8. Encountering a slower car on the back straightaway, Goess went low, Howard went high and they entered Turn 3 door-to-door. Howard nosed ahead to lead the lap, but Goess quickly regained command of the event. After caution flags on laps 17 and 23, the field was set for a three-lap dash to the finish. On the final restart, Goess bolted to a two-car-length advantage and extended his edge to four lengths by the end. Howard was second, followed by Yeatts, Don McLaughlin of Chesapeake and Cameron Patrick of Newport News, Va.
