Southern All Star Asphalt Racing Series Gearing Up For New Year

By Lynn Acklin

HUNTSVILLE, AL --The 2001 campaign of the Southern All Stars Asphalt Racing Series season should be another wild and woolly year as the series will start it's 12th year and will be going to many of the same tracks and facilities that were on the schedule in the year 2000.

The season will open up with a the 8th Annual Earlybird 100 at the Birmingham Int'l Raceway in Birmingham, AL, on Sunday afternoon February 25th, then the series will gets it first of two races this season at the Nashville Speedway USA, the first on Saturday night March 17th opening night at Nashville as the series will compete in a 220 lap event along with the Late Model Stock and Supertrucks and the second of the year will be on Tuesday night July 3rd a 150 lap event.

The series returns this year to the tight quarter mile at Huntsville for two events the first one is on Friday night April 13th and the second event is on Friday night June 15th.

Also on the scheduled will be the Winston Cup weekend event at Birmingham on Saturday April 21st along with race at BIR on Friday night August 17th and the Winston Cup weekend on Saturday night October 20th.

South Alabama Motor Speedway in Opp, AL, is back this year with their annual 125 lap event on Saturday night May 5th, also coming back to the schedule in the year will be the trip to the Lanier National Speedway in Gainesville, GA, for three events on Saturday night may 26th, Saturday night September 1st and Saturday October 6th.

Hickory Motor Speedway will have one event on the series this year as last with a 200 lap event on Saturday night June 23rd. Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA, will have a pair of 125 lap events on Sept 1st and Oct 13th.

The series will conclude the season with a pair of 200 lap events at the end of the year on Sunday October 28th at the Orange County Speedway in Rougemount, NC, and on Sunday November 4th at the Mobile Int'l Raceway in Mobile, AL.

2000 Champion Ricky Turner is coming back to defend his title in 2001 and should be one of the drivers that will be in the battle for the season long championship along with Ronnie Sanders of Fayetteville, GA, Jason Hogan of Cleveland, GA, David Hole of Cumming, GA, Johnny Wall of Huntsville, AL, J R Dudley of Conyers, GA and Johnny Henderson of Conyers, GA.

Then as usual there will be one or two drivers that come out of nowhere to grab the attention and be a front runner on the series as has come to past in the year before, so the 2001 series run for the title should be a good one and as usual they will be racing hard and fast and showing that you can race three wide at racetracks during the season.
