Three Men Vie for the Top Spot at the Track, and In the Region

August 29, 2001
Larry Bateman
NRVS Writer

Radford, VA- Coming into the race that completes the Blue Ridge Regional Standings, three competitors, Chad Harris (02), Wade Day (96), and Philip Morris (01), await the start of this week's Roanoke Times 200 more than most others.

For these three drivers, much hangs in the balance as Harris and Day are tied at the top of the New River Valley Speedway track points and Morris just a tick behind, trailing the leaders by only six points. All three drivers know what it is like to be at the top as Harris and Morris have both won NRVS track championships and Day won the 2000 track championship at Kingsport in Tennessee en route to being the 2000 Blue Ridge Regional Champion.

This season Morris has the chance at being the Blue Ridge Regional Champion if he is able to finish three positions or higher than both Morris and Day this Saturday, and possibly even contend for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series National Championship.

Morris enters this weekend with the third highest Competition Performance Index (CPI) number in the nation, but cannot do anything with that high average if he cannot get into the track points lead coming out of this week's race. In order to win a regional championship, the driver must be winning the points at their home track, which is why Morris needs help in order to finish with the elite of the Weekly Racing Series competitors.

The regional and track champions from across the nation will meet in Orlando, Florida in November for the official awards ceremony.

The leader of each track in points is placed in the 1st tier, second in points 2nd tier and so forth for a total of five tiers. The NWRS Championship and Regional Championships are based on a calculated number involving wins, top-5's, starts, and the track car count.
