McCaskill Takes OCS Season Opener

A field of 21 NASCAR Late Model Stock cars were on hand to kick off the True Value 255 season opener. Brad Kurth of Belews Creek started on the pole of the 150-lap event. Terry Dease of Oxford was second fastest qualifier. Dease took to the point early with Kurth giving charge until Kurth experienced a problem and had to pit on lap 51. Dease continued to lead for 55 laps before Deac McCaskill of Raleigh was able to make his move to the front of the field.

David Triplett of Durham gave McCaskill a run until lap 75 when he too experienced problems. Jason Gullie of Durham then gave chase to McCaskill but was unable to make any gains for the remainder of the race. The top five were rounded out by Dease, Chuck Lawson of Providence and Frank Deiny (who came from the rear twice after making pit stops). Last year’s track champion Barry Beggarly was unable to make the event due to back problems.

The Limited Sportsman Division saw a field of 15 cars take the green for their 50-lap feature. Pole winner Brent Briggs of Hurdle Mills chased Danville’s Peyton Sellers for 30 laps before making his pass and going on for the win. Sellers was able to hold on for second. Jonathan Cash of Oxford worked his way through the field to finish in third with Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill taking home fourth. Raleigh’s Donald Brace made a charge from a 10th place start to finish in fifth. Troy Jones had a strong run going before being involved in a crash on lap 39 which took him out.

The Coca-Cola Grand Stocks saw Brent Evans of Durham continue his winning way, but newcomer Timmy Ferrell of Durham, who moved up from the Pure Stock 4 Division, gave notice that he had come to give challenge with a second place finish in his first time out. James Turner had a strong third place finish with Greensboro’s Brian Cole taking home a fourth place finish. Tommy Chandler was the fifth place finisher.

Randy Richardson of Durham came out strong in the Modified 4’s taking the win. Durham’s Josh Baker had a strong second place finish. Hillsborough’s Jeremy Owens was third place finisher with Tracey Chambers in fourth and Kevin Smith in fifth.

The Unlimited Dreams Custom Motorcycles & Augie’s Custom Art Works Pure Stock 4’s saw Dennis Sargent take his first win. Jeff Wilson was close behind just waiting for Sargent to make a slip but it was not to be. Division sponsor Augie Saccoccio finished in third with Durham County’s own Jerry Elliott taking home a fourth place run. Tony Lassiter finished in fifth position.

The next event at Orange County Speedway will be Saturday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Models will run a double feature event, with the Limited Sportsman running 50 laps, the Coca-Cola Grand Stocks 25 laps, Modified 4’s 20 laps and Unlimited Dreams Custom Motorcycles & Augie’s Custom Art Works Pure Stock 4’s running 15 laps.
