Radford, VA., The U.A.W Local 2069 200 fired up a lot of excitement Saturday night. The night’s main event ended the evening with lots of close racing, as the field of 30 Late Model Stock Cars ran door to door all race.

Steve Lynch (11) started on the pole after the field was inverted due to points, putting Philip Morris (01) in the sixth position because he won the last race and captured the pole with a time of 16.46 seconds. The first caution flew on lap thirteen when Wade Day (96) and Mike Looney (94) spun on the backstretch, relegating them both to the pits. Both would return to the race, but Looney eventually parked his car due to the damage sustained.

Morris’s car died on the backstretch during the red and never re-entered the race, giving him a 30th place finish. The tight racing continued as Butch Hamlet (21) squeezed past Lee Blaker (32) to take the lead on the fifty-sixth lap but lost it when he and Tony McGuire (7) raced through turn four, where they made contact, spinning Hamlet and bringing out the caution. McGuire went on to take his first victory this season, with Blaker and Eric Sartin (40) rounding out the top three.

The H & H Carpet Late Model Truck division started a field of thirteen, with Joe Lucas (31) on the pole. Aaron Deplazes (02) led the race until the twenty-ninth lap when Rick Sigmon (45) came in for the steal. Many cautions were called during the fifty lap race for spins, but Sigmon came out on top for his second week in a row. Deplazes came in second with Jason Lawrence (54) coming in third.

The Blue Ridge Timberwright Pure Stock division ran a twenty-five lap race with a field of fourteen. There was a black flag called on the first lap when Dean McCreary (88) was leaking oil. There were two cautions called for debris and spins. Anthony Huff (57) claimed victory with Mark Harris (45) taking the second place position and Dean Sutphin (11) rounding out the top three.

In the New River Valley Mall Mini Stock division, Ron Thomas started in the 13th after breaking a rocker arm in the first heat race of the evening, but quickly picked off the field as he made his way to the front for his third victory of the season. The field of eighteen went green-white-checkered twice to end the race due to spins that prolonged the event. Ken Moxley (09) took second and third went to Wayne Moore (5).

The Mini Cup division visited NRVS again this weekend. In the future star race four cars made up the field with first place going to Jamie Byrd (42), Chris Jones (31) took second with Justin Martin (36) claiming third. The regular Mini-Cup race had a field of thirteen. The top three finishers were all part of the Allied Motorsports team. They were Dennis Saville (98), Mitchell Saville (90), and Steve Johnson (97).

Next week at the New River Valley Speedway is the Newschannel 10/ Harvey’s Chevrolet 200. The line-up is 25 laps of mini-stocks and pure stocks, a 50 lap truck race, and 100 laps of Late Model Stock Cars. Come and enjoy the second week of June at NRVS.
