PHILIP MORRIS CAPTURES THE POLE AND WIN

By Diane Brinkley and Lisa Voit, NRVS Writers

RADFORD, VA-The excitement continues at the New River Valley Speedway with the running of the Bailey’s 200 on April 14th.

The racing was intense during the NASCAR Late Model Stock Car 100 lap feature. A total of five cautions came out during the event. The biggest caution of the race came on lap 36 when the number 55 of Rick Sigmon broke loose in turn three and collected Boyd Sult (12) and Rick Carrico (18). Boyd Sult suffered more damage when his front bumper was knocked off by Brandon Nichols as he raced by.

Last week’s winner, Butch Hamlet, who ended with a third place finish, said "We’ll take it (finishing third), it was a long race...I did all I could to stay patient. I touched a few people, but I did all I could to not aggravate anybody."

The race for first and second was a close one all night long, with Chad Harris finishing second and Phillip Morris coming out with the win. Harris would catch up to Morris on the long runs, but had trouble on restarts. A late race caution prevented Harris from taking the lead. "The longer we’d go, the better we were," said Harris.

Phillip Morris captured the win from the pole, leading every lap of the race. "Our team needed this; I needed this," said Morris.

There was plenty of action in the H&H Carpet Late Model Truck race. It started early in lap six as Randy Howard tapped Brian Creasy into the wall. Creasy’s contact with the wall caused his truck to burst into flames in the exit of turn two. Brian Creasy did not sustain any major injuries from the accident.

Rick Sigmon led 41 of the 50 laps, until Bo Howell took the lead from him and went on to take the checkered flag. "There was hard racing out there. I don’t get ahead very often, so I get them when I can," said Howell.

The Pure Stock and New River Valley Mall Mini Stock cars opened the night with clean racing and a few cautions. Mark Harris, who took second last week in the pure stocks, pursued the win this week. "I didn’t change that much on the car. I went back to some old tires because I didn’t like the new ones," said Harris. Ken Moxley took first in the New River Valley Mall Mini Stocks after finishing 15th last week. When asked about his first win of the season, Moxley said,"It feels pretty good, I had some bad luck last week, this made up for it."

This week’s program ended with the running of the crazy U-Cars (You Can Afford Racing). These street cars, with only slight modifications, entertained the crowd with plenty of rough racing. Over 30 cars started the race, though numerous cars didn’t make it to the finish line.

Racing resumes next Saturday for the running of the Checkered Flag Sports/Carquest Road to Charlotte 200. All students (ages 13 and up, college students need to present a valid id) get in to the action packed night for only $2.
