Chastain Wins Rain-Shortened Late Model 100 at Lanierby Jeff HoodBRASELTON, GA (July 4, 2001) - Shane Chastain passed Jamie Stephens, Jr on lap 77 then held on to the top spot as a heavy rain shower passed over Lanier National Speedway on lap 94 of 100. The 22-car field was red-flagged, then 20 minutes later Chastain was declared the winner as the rain continued to fall. The win was worth $3,000 on double-points night at Lanier. In a soggy victory lane Chastain said, "it was a critical race (with double points on the line) but we were able to come out on top. We've just got to keep inching our way back to the top in points. Tonight, my car just seemed to come in the longer the race went where Jamie's seemed to go away. It was just a matter of setup tonight." On whether or not he would have preferred to run the last six laps, Chastain commented, "I was really praying for rain." Stephens, Jr finished second ahead of Tony Bennett, Mike Love, and Debris Brown.
