Willard Wows'em at Lanierby Jeff HoodBraselton, GA (May 26, 2001) - Wayne Willard of Dacula, GA continued his domination of the Southern-All Star Asphalt Series as he led wire to wire to collect the top prize in Saturday night's Crystal Clear Pools 150 at Lanier National Speedway. Willard bested the field in time trials winning the Garrison Racing Equipment fast qualifier award after posting a time of 13.503 seconds around the 3/8 mile facility. Willard rolled a two during the inversion procedure which put Lanier regular Mike Love on the pole. But when the green flag waved to start the event Willard outhustled Love into turn one and set sail for victory. It was a typical Southern-All Star show with plenty of action as the 150 lapper featured 13 cautions. But despite numerous restarts, Willard was the class of the field. Jason Hogan moved into second place on lap 56 and appeared primed to challenge Willard for the top spot but was unable to mount a pass for the lead. When asked about his dominant run Willard said, "we've had a pretty dominant car all year long and I didn't think our car was going to be as good tonight as it turned out to be. I figured T.J. (Jason) was a bit better than us from what I had seen this afternoon although he didn't get a whole lot of practice (Hogan ran over a piece of lead weight from another car during practice). He had the car to beat based on what I saw in practice but it just so happened when the race got going the race track came back to me." "I was saving my tires up until about lap 80. I never pushed the car hard until T.J. made a run on me, then I picked the pace up a bit and he could stay with me five or six laps then he started falling off. So I'd run hard for another five or six laps just to get a little distance on him then I'd back down a bit." Hogan finished seven car-lengths behind Willard as the checkers flew. Rounding out the top five was David Hole, Brian Smith and points leader Ricky Turner. In Akins of Winder Pro Truck action George Williams, Jr muscled past Joey Love with seven laps remaining to claim the top prize Saturday night. Thomas Ross continued his recent string of excellent runs by notching another win in the Sunoco Ministock class. The Brown Motorsports Modifieds made their 2001 Lanier debut with Kyle Gregson taking the feature win.
