SILVA SAILS ON SATURDAY, DQ'ed ON MONDAY

GREENVILLE, SC (August 6, 2001) - With a 58 point lead and yet another win coming on Saturday for Late Model veteran Pete Silva, it appeared that Silva was moving ever so close to a mathematical points lock with only two events left which could be counted in NASCAR's regional and national Weekly Racing Series points calculation. But as the checkered flag fell on Silva's black Chevrolet Monte Carlo on Saturday at the Greenville Pickens Speedway, Brad Allen, owner of the Donnie Bishop race team, was posting protest money that put the outcome in doubt. Track officials impounded the Silva car, awaiting the Monday arrival of NASCAR southeast regional director Joe Collins.

After a 6 hour inspection, Collins ruled that Silva's fuel cell and wheel base were outside the specifications outlined by NASCAR, resulting in a disqualification. The result tightens the points battle and keeps Bishop within striking distance, but a disappointing 16 place finish for Bishop allows him to gain only 20 points on Silva. Bishop trimmed the Silva lead to a somewhat manageable 38 points with two point races remaining, down from 58 before the race began. If the Silva win had stood, his lead would have gone to 88, a near mathematical lock.

After Silva passed Bishop on the frontstretch of lap 3, and within 5 laps, Marietta's Marty Ward and defending track champion Gene Morgan also moved to the front past Bishop. By lap 13 Bishop had faded to 15th place. Ward held on to place second, but was declared the winner after the Monday inspections, his second win of the season. Morgan was second, and R.A. Brown from Irmo was third. Simpsonville's David Roberts was fourth, and Easley's Toby Porter rounded out the top five.

After Defending Super Stock champion C.M. Knight held off Greenville's Ken Guthrie and points leader Robby Robbins to score his first win of the season. Last week's winner Randy Ballew of Easley placed fourth, and Easley's Michael Cain was fifth.

After B.F. Goodrich Street Stock points leader Chris Meinders of Liberty moved one step closer to a championship, moving past Anthony Anders to score his second consecutive win. Anders settled for second, with Greg Jarrett taking third. Dacusville's Red Ables was fourth, and Greenville's Tim Sams placed fifth.

After In the Charger events, Greenville's Ryan Dombrosky won his second consecutive race, holding off Greenville's Joel Cox and James Madden. Easley's Kennith Powell held off Charger points leader Ted Somero of Greer to win for the third time this season. Byron Mabry was third.
