BISHOP ROLLS TO FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORYGREENVILLE, SC (April 21, 2001)- The Donnie Bishop beat continued at the Greenville Pickens Speedway on Saturday despite the return of Randy Porter and the best efforts of two other former track champions to deny Bishop his fifth straight victory lane appearance. Bishop sailed to a five car length victory over Marietta's Marty Ward, who challenged early but fell steadily throughout the 35 lap event. Opening night winner Pete Silva of Asheville placed third, with Porter, who made his first season appearance at the track, placing fourth. The race was slowed only once by caution, as a turn three tangle on lap 2 involved at least seven racers at the back of the pack. On the restart, it appeared that Ward would challenge Bishop for the lead, but Bishop managed to keep his Chevrolet in the lead. By lap 11, Bishop begin to put some distance between himself and the pack and was never seriously challenged in the remaining 24 circuits. "Marty had a good race car tonight and if I had sneezed he would have been right there," Bishop said. "They're always competitive and good people and I love racing with them." Greenville's Robby Robbins made a return to victory lane after top contenders Phillip Lynch of Greenville and Easley's Randy Ballew tangled early on the backstretch. Robbins battled Greenville's Greg Dodgens in the closing laps but held on to record his third season victory. Super Stock newcomer Jamie Tate of Easley scored an impressive third, with Greenville's Robin Darnell placing fourth. Scott Mote of Easley rounded out the top five. The win puts Robbins back atop the Super Stock points chase after three straight Phillip Lynch wins. In the 15 lap Street event, Easley's Billy Lusk held off a determined Chris Meinders of Liberty to score his first win in three years and his first ever Street Stock victory. Lusk took the lead on lap 12 as early leader Daryl Culbertson of Travelers Rest fell off the pace. Culbertson ended up settling for third, as Greenville's Anthony Anders placed fourth. Red Ables of Dacusville placed fifth. Greenville's Bubba Horton edged out brother Robert Horton at the line to take the Charger I checkers. Last week's winner Travis Hardin placed second after Robert failed technical inspection. Ryan Dombrosky of Greenville, Joel Cox of Greenville, and Travelers Rest's Roger Knight rounded out the third through fifth place positions. Charger points leader Ted Somero of Greer padded his point lead by scoring his third season win. Somero took the lead on lap 3 and went on to score a convincing win over Greenville's Shane Gentry and Greenville's Michael Pittman. Bryan Davis of Easley placed fourth, as Liberty's Jimmy Henson was fifth.
