GREENVILLE PICKENS SPEEDWAY OPENS 56TH SEASON WITH TRIBUTE TO DALE EARNHARDTGREENVILLE, SC (March 12, 2001) - The Greenville Pickens Speedway will roar to life for a 56th season of NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action this Saturday, March 17th. Ron's TV-Direct TV Opening Night 2001 will feature Late Model, Super Stock, Street Stock, and Charger racing action. A special ceremony dedicating the Dale Earnhardt Memorial Backstretch will take place at intermission. Ralph Earnhardt, father of the fallen 7 time Winston Cup Champion, competed at the speedway regularly during the 1960s, and won the track's 1965 and 1966 track championship. A teenage Dale Earnhardt spent most Saturday nights in the Greenville Pickens pits during those years, and returned often to the Upstate to meet his fans and sign autographs at the Upper South Carolina State Fair. General admission gates will open at 4pm on Saturday, with the first race scheduled for 8pm. Adult general admission will be $10.00, with children under 12 admitted free with a paying adult. The first 2,001 fans through the gate will receive a free WESC/Dale Earnhardt commemorative checkered flag. The Greenville Pickens Speedway is located at the intersection of highways 123 and 124 between Greenville and Easley.
