SHANE HMIEL LIKES CALLING SOUTH CAROLINA HOME, SCORING SECOND SEASON GOODY'S DASH SEASON VICTORY AT GREENVILLE PICKENS SPEEDWAY

GREENVILLE, SC (July 14, 2001)- Shane Hmiel is fast becoming the South Carolina Department of Travel and Tourism's best spokesperson, now that the Pleasant Garden, NC native has notched two NASCAR Goody's Dash season wins on Palmetto turf in 2001. Hmiel, competing in the touring series as a rookie, got his first ever win back on May 12 at Darlington, and recorded his second victory of the season at Greenville Pickens Speedway on Saturday in the Bi-Lo/Lance Snack Foods 150.

Hmiel led twice in the early circuits, but surrendered that lead to Jimmy Britts, the 1999 Rookie of the Year from Orange Park, Florida, on lap 98. Britts looked headed for his first win of the season when a huge pileup in turn one on lap 136 gathered in several cars including the front-running Britts. That was the opening Hmiel needed and he took full advantage, moving his Pontiac to the point and never relinquishing the lead in the final 14 laps.

"About the time Jimmy got by me, my leg started cramping up on my gas foot," Hmiel said in victory lane. "My foot came back to me a little bit, and luckily for me, and I hate it for Jimmy, but he got in a wreck. It worked out for us."

Shane's father, Steve, is the marketing/public relations director of Dale Earnhardt Inc., and a former crew chief for Mark Martin.

Three-time defending Goody's Dash champion Robert Huffman, driving a Toyota Celica, was once again denied a trip to Greenville Pickens victory lane, settling for a distant second place showing. Huffman, who has won more Goody's Dash event than any other driver in the Series history, has never won on the flat 1/2 mile of GPS.

"I guess we'll come back and get them next year," said Huffman.

Justin Hobgood of Winnsboro, NC was third, with Danny Bagwell of Cordova, AL taking fourth. Joey Miller of Wilmington, NC rounded out the top five.

Easley's Randy Porter last visited Late Model victory lane on August 5, 2000, and his return after almost a year's absence provided plenty of fireworks for the big Goody's Dash crowd. Porter won a white flag lap battle by edging leader David Roberts of Simpsonville and holding off Marietta's Marty Ward as the trio rounded turn four heading for the checkered flag. The thrilling victory proved to be one of the most exciting Late Model finishes of the season.

"We had a little misfortune last year and just wanted to come back and win some races this year," Porter said after the race. Roberts settled for a disappointing second, with Ward holding on to take third. Taylor's Dennis Southerlin had his best season showing by placing fourth, with Greenville's Blair Addis scoring his best Late Model finish by rounding out the top five.

Greenville's Robby Robbins made a return to Super Stock victory lane after an absence of almost one month. Robbins dominated the 15 lap event to win his ninth race of the season, but his first since June 16. Phillip Lynch moved from back of the pack to place second, with Easley's Michael Cain placing third. Greg Dodgens was fourth, and Josh Bradley placed fifth.

Easley's Kennith Powell survived a caution filled Charger I event to win his second race of the season. Points leader Ted Somero of Greer was second, with James Johnson moving up through the pack to place third. Greenville's Joel Cox was fourth, and three time winner Pete Porter placed fifth.

In the second Charger race, Ryan Dombrosky of Greenville won his first career Charger race, by holding off Bryan Davis in the closing laps. Frank Dean was third, with Michael Pittman placing fourth. Easley's Scott Mann rounded out the top five.
