ANGIE WILSON AND SCOTT WEAVER AT THE TOP IN FINAL DAY OF TESTING AT DAYTONABy Randy ClaypooleDaytona Beach, Fl (Jan 15) - The Second day of Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring testing for the AC Delco "200" Presented by Discount Auto Parts at Daytona International Speedway found several drivers improving on their lap times posted on the previous day. Angie Wilson of Nebo, NC., one of two female drivers in the series, showed the way in this final day of winter testing with a speed of 164.504 mph. Just a bumper behind was Shelby, NC driver, Scott Weaver at 164.480 mph. Rounding out the top five were the brothers from Winnsboro, SC Justin and Jake Hobgood at 164.207 and 164.186 respectively, and the 2000 NAPA Filters Rookie of the Year Cam Strader, from Wilson, NC. posting a speed of 164.039.
Angie Wilson and Scott Weaver spent time drafting to see how well their cars will perform together. "I owe a lot to my team and to Scott Weaver," said Wilson. "My guys worked so hard to prepare this car, that I really have to give them the credit for it running so well. Scott knows what it takes to do good in qualifying, having sat on the pole here in 1999, and his drafting experience is of a great benefit to me. To come here and test so well is a such a confidence booster for me, that I can't wait to come back for the race." Cam Strader is eager to show that he has what it takes to be a successful race car driver. His Wesson Cooking Oil team led by Barry Owen has called on engine builder Jan Smith to furnish them the horsepower it takes to run up front. The combination of Owen and Smith historically has produced several Daytona wins. Strader is hoping to add to that history when the series competes here on Saturday, February 10, 2001. Series Champion Robert Huffman moved his White House Apple Juice Toyota into the top ten. Though Toyota has raced in the series for several seasons, Toyota Racing Development became involved last season with Eric Van Cleef, and now this year with Huffman. Huffman fresh off his third consecutive Series Championship (fourth overall) was ready for a new personal challenge. "Making the switch to Toyota gives us a chance to participate in helping TRD reach their goal of succeeding in NASCAR racing. I am excited about working with them and with Eric Van Cleef. We have worked very hard to get the engine program to where we can be competitive." Today's speed charts are an indication of that effort.
