Thomasville’s Steve Loftin Ends Winless Streak; Burr Takes Over Points Lead

By: Renee Hackett

September 22, 2001 – Asheboro, N.C.— Two-Time Late Model Stock Track Champion Loftin often referred to as “The Chair City Charger” started out the night by capturing his first pole of the season by posting a fast lap of 94.742 mph. After a mandatory drawing of the top six qualifiers, he would be starting in the 5th spot.

On the drop of the green Jerry Burr of Asheboro took to the lead, but Loftin was coming through the pack hard and fast. He would relieve Burr of the lead on lap 68 of 150. After almost 2 years, Loftin returned to victory lane sporting a new paint scheme and car. “This is a blessing to our team. It’s been a hard season with a lot of finger pointing, but this crew has stood behind me and I’m giving this trophy to my crew chief and brother-in-law Tim Burton. This is his first ever win and I’m glad to have him on my team.” Loftin commented from victory lane.

Burr would bring home second place. Randy Benson of Rockingham, Gregg Anderson of Roseville, California, Keith Woody of Burlington, Rusty Harpe of Lexington, Dan Moore of Bear Creek, Stephen Grimes of Siler City, Richard Boyles of High Point and Owen Gray of Oak Ridge rounded out the top ten finishers.

In the battle for the Track Points, Burr has taken over the lead by 12 points after Billy Hogan of Troy and Jason York of Reidsville were both disqualified after a technical inspection that was protested by each other. Sitting in fourth spot just 44 points shy of the lead is Loftin. With only three events left, Loftin is now in reach of a possible third championship title.
