Jerry Burr wins Gatorade 150 with Backup Engine

Asheboro, NC (June 9, 2001) - Asheboro's Jerry Burr, after blowing a motor in practice, went on to win the Gatorade 150 Saturday night, June 9th, at the Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C..

Burr's crew was able to get a backup motor from the shop into Burr's #01 ride in time for qualifying. Burr qualified eighth out of a large field of 23 cars.

Jason York, the race polesitter, looked like he was going to pull away from the field until a late caution for a spinning Rusty Harpe down the front stretch, bunched up the cars and set up for a final nail-biting sprint to the finish.

Contact between race leader York and second place sitter Burr in turns three and four let Burr slip by York. Burr was able to hold onto the lead as the checkers flew. York finished second.

Following York was points leader Billy Hogan. Hogan was followed by Rodney Cook and Junior Cox to round out the top five.

Completing the top ten were Gregg Anderson, Robert Tyler, Dan Moore, Steve Loftin, and J. P. Morgan. Morgan is a regular at the Concord Motorsports Park on Saturday nights.

Crowd favorites Stephen Grimes and Jimmy Mullins both retired early in Saturday night's event. Grimes had engine problems and Mullins was caught up in a lap one wreck.

1996 Caraway track champ, Donnie Apple, returned to the track for the Gatorade 150 but had to call it quits after being involved in several incidents that took his unsponsored #15 out of contention.
