Ray Young Joins Captures “Bailey’s Season Opener 150”Asheboro, NC (Mar 24, 2001) – The ground trembled as the future stars of tomorrow fired their engines for the Bailey’s Season Opener 150 Lap feature Late Model Stock event. Brad Brinkley of Sanford received an extra $100 and a Plaque for posting the fastest qualifying speed. After a mandatory redraw of the top six qualifiers, Stephen “The Grimey One” Grimes of Siler City started in the pole position with Brian King of Gibsonville on the outside.
Grimes would continue to fight off Ray Young of Bassett, Virginia until lap 135. After three more cautions the final caution would turn into a red flag on lap 148. Randy Benson of Rockingham blew an engine on the backstretch and several cars piled up including Rookie Rusty Harpe of Winston Salem (2000 Limited Stock Champion). On the restart, Young would keep his car out front, capturing his first victory at Caraway Speedway. Grimes, King, Gene Kepley of Lexington, Nathan Buttke of Randleman, Keith Clapp of Asheboro, Jerry Burr of Asheboro, Junior Cox of Asheboro, Brad Brinkley of Sanford and Billy Hogan of Troy rounded out the top ten finishers. In the Limited Late Model Dale Trotter of Asheboro captured his first Pole Award. Trotter would keep his Dodge out front for two laps before Casey Kepley Jr. of Winston Salem took the lead. Kepley would stay out front through four cautions and lead all but 2 of the 30 lap feature capturing his first career victory. Clay Campbell of Martinsville, Va (president of Martinsville Speedway), James Boling of Randleman, Jeff Garrison of Clemmons and Trotter rounded out the top five finishers. In the Super Sport event David Thomas of Randleman captured the Pole and the victory. Ray Salmon of Carthage, Steven Worthington of High Point, Greg McDaniel of Siler City and Travis Jarrett of Lexington rounded out the top five finishers. In the Mini Stock event Rodney Creason of Asheboro captured the Pole and the Victory. Ricky Jacobs of West End, Brad Queen of Greensboro, David Warr of High Point and Rich Hunter of Advance rounded out the top five finishers. In the Super Mini Truck event once again the pole sitter Stephen Brodie of Martinsville, Virginia took home the victory. Waylon Saunders of Asheboro, Kelly Spencer of Kernersville, Tiger Bare of Randleman and Lisa Collins of Asheboro rounded out the top five finishers. Coming up next Saturday night will be a 150 lap SMART Modified event, 50 lap Late Model Stock, 30 Lap Limited Late Model, 20 Lap Super Sport and 15 Lap Mini Stock. Grandstands will open at 6PM. Pits and Backside gates will open at 2pm and the racing action will begin at 8pm. Practice will be Thursday from 4pm until dark.
