KILBY WINS BOBBY ISAAC MEMORIAL FOR THE FIFTH TIME

HICKORY, NC - Bobby Isaac would have been proud.

Scott Kilby of nearby Statesville, NC, won his fifth career Bobby Isaac Memorial 200 Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway, a 200-lap race that was highlighted by three-wide rubbing and fender-bumping action that Isaac was infamous for.

Isaac died of a heat stroke following a race at Hickory in 1977, and his memorial event has become one of the biggest late model stock car events of the season.

"If you’re going to win one race a year, this is the one to win," said Kilby, who previously won this event in 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1995 when it was part of Hickory’s weekly late model show. The victory was worth $5,000.

This victory took on added significance as it was Kilby’s second straight on the American Racing Association (ARA) Kool Seal Challenge series circuit, and he was able to boost his lead by another dozen points to 20 over chief challenger Keith Bumgarner of Conover, NC. Kilby’s margin of victory was about one-tenth of a second.

Kilby was the fastest qualifier in his #30 A&H Windows Chevrolet, but elected to invert and start sixth. That put Keith Stiltner of Grundy, VA, on the pole, and after giving up the lead to 14-year-old sensation Stephen Leicht of Asheville, NC, for the first two laps, Stiltner led laps 3-122 in his #22 Racing Mining Pontiac.

But on lap 123, Kilby had completed his charge from his sixth starting spot and took the lead for keeps with a low-side move right before the start/finish line. Despite several challenges from Bumgarner’s #95 Country Chair Ford in the closing laps, Kilby retained the lead to the finish, and claimed his third ARA Kool Seal Challenge victory of the season.

"This is just a great victory, and getting the maximum number of points for the second race in a row is a big boost for the championship," Kilby said. "Keith was tough there at the end. He got into me on one restart, and he’ll say that I brake-checked him, but I just wanted until the last possible minute to hit the throttle and he just rear-ended me. He got underneath me enough to wheelspin my tires. I know he’s frustrated, but things have just gone perfectly for me the last two races."

Binky Bollinger of Hickory was third in his #8 Treasure Gift Shop Ford, and Greg Marlow of Troutman, NC, moved from a 15th starting position to claim fourth in his #07 Southern Pride Chevrolet. Stiltner wound up fifth.

The next event is on Sunday, Sept. 2, at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA, when the ARA runs a 125-lap doubleheader of both the Kool Seal Challenge and Southern Thunder series.

ARA MONTGOMERY RACE TO BE RESCHEDULED

PENDERGRASS, GA - The American Racing Association (ARA) Southern Thunder Series race scheduled for Aug. 25th at Montgomery (AL) Motor Speedway has been postponed, and will be rescheduled at another venue on Sept. 15th, ARA President Terry Treadwell announced today.

The ARA races at Montgomery Motor Speedway listed for Sept. 29th and Nov. 11th will be held as scheduled.

"I have talked with HMS, LLC management (owners of Montgomery Motor Speedway) and feel confident their issues will be resolved in time for our scheduled event on September 29th," Treadwell said. "We regret the inconvenience to our fans, teams and sponsors, but the circumstances have been out of our control."

The next Southern Thunder race will be part of an ARA doubleheader Sunday, Sept. 2, at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA. The Southern Thunder series will be joined by the ARA Kool Seal Challenge All-Star series during the Kool Seal Twin 125s.
