Ghost Rider Rises Back

COEBURN, Va. - You can't keep a good man down. Keith Bumgarner, aka the Ghost Rider, set pole and led flag to flag in the ARA Late Model Stock All-Stars Pepsi-Cola 125 Saturday night at Lonesome Pine Raceway, the scene of a similar effort by the Ghost Rider a month ago. Bumgarner, who had fallen off somewhat over the past two events from his torrid start, reinstated himself as the man to beat in the 2001 season.

Keith Stiltner set outside pole and challenged Bumgarner over the first fifteen laps, but could not gather enough car to take the lead. Scott Kilby, who trailed Bumgarner by only two points heading in to the night, was busy picking off Stephen Lite for third place, setting the table for a charge to the front. Following a restart on lap 39, Kilby made his move past Stiltner to claim second, then zeroed in on Bumgarner.

As the sun disappeared and the track cooled and tightened, Bumgarner only got stronger. Kilby was able to reel him in by lap 75, but it was a losing effort, as Bumgarner pulled away for good.

Stephen Lite, the Carolina Kid, held on strong to finish where he started in third, while the Iceman Westley Huffman was able to unseat Stiltner for fourth. Stiltner placed fifth on the night. Scott Hall, Frampton Ferguson and Tim Weaver continued their run of impressive outings, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth. Jay Godley and Allen Gordon showed signs of strengthening, finishing ninth and tenth.

The ARA All-Star Series will be off next weekend, then travel to famed Hickory Motor Speedway for Round Nine on June 9th.
